| The
Yuan dynasty represented an important transitional period in the history
of Chinese painting. Scholar-official painters represented by Zhao
Mengfu in the early Yuan period rejected the Art Academy style and
resumed the tradition of the Tang and northern Song dynasties. By
advocating calligraphic charm in painting, they founded the Yuan style
which stressed lingering charm and took rules lightly. During the
middle and late Yuan, the literati Xieyi paintings became popular.
" Four Masters of the Yuan" established typical style of
literati landscape painting. |
