| Two prevailing trends represented by "Four Wangs"of
old style and "Four Monks" of fresh style appeared in
the early Qing dynasty. In the middle Qing, a group of
painters in the Yangzhou area used novel style to
express their charm and personality and formed the
"Yangzhou School". By the late Qing, a more gentle
and delicate style emerged. At the same time, some painters such as
Wu Changshuo
and Zhao Zhiqian initiated a Xieyi style for flower and bird painting.
After the
mid-19th century, many painters and artists gathered in some coastal
cities with
developed economy such as Shanghai and Guangzhou and formed new styles
or schools
such as "Shanghai School" and "Lingnan School",
which influence Chinese painting
even today. |
