Embroidered Green Satin Dress, Uygur

Date: Qing (AD 1644-1911)
Area: Urumqi, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region
Material: Satin

Description

Uygur women prefer colored dresses. With loose shape, strong colors and dense patterns, the dress sways and looks romantic. The pattern of this dress is embroidered with an old embroidery method called Pixian (splitting the thread), which results in color shading layer by layer. The whole piece looks splendid and elegant.
This method is the same as the embroidery technique of the Buddha figures from the Southern and Northern dynasties to the Sui and Tang dynasties, which is a sufficient demonstration of the deep historical origin of Uygur traditional embroidery.
