Hua Yan (1682-1756) is also known by his zi (designated name) Qiuyue and his hao (literary names) Xinluo Shanren and Ligou Jushi. A native of Shanghang of Fujian province, Hua Yan later moved to Hangzhou and Yangzhou. He was skilled in painting figure, landscape, flower and bird, plant, and insect. He depicted birds with a realistic approach, presenting dynamic images. This painting shows a beautiful scene of birds chirping on a towering old tree in an exquisite and elegant style. The artist painted this painting at the age of 68 (1749) in the 14th year of the Qianlong reign.
