Zhu Da (1626-1705), originally named Tongquan, is also known by his hao (literary names) Xuege and Bada Shanren. A native of Nanchang, Jiangxi province, he was a descendant of the Ming imperial family. Zhu Da was famous for his landscape and flower-and-bird paintings rendered with simple and expressive brushstrokes. This is an ink xieyi (freehand) painting depicting fish, duck, and lake rock. The composition shows a balance between the sparse and the dense as well as a combination of stillness and movement. The artist painted the painting at the age of 64 in the 28th year (1689) of the Kangxi reign.
