Zhao Mengfu (1254-July 29th, 1322) was a famous painter and calligrapher of the Yuan dynasty.
This work incorporates the calligraphic brushwork into painting touches of orchids, bamboos and rocks. The artist used the grass script style for the rocks to express the texture of the stones; he applied the running script style on the bamboos, which look powerful and elegant; he brushed the bamboo leaves with the falling strokes of the official script to reflect the vigorous and dignified appeal.
Zhao Mengfu was proficient in both calligraphy and painting and was the one who put forward the theory of the common origins of calligraphy and painting. This piece of work is a typical example of his practice of the theory by blending calligraphy strokes into painting.
