Xia Chang (1388-1470) was an expert in bamboo painting, boasting for ‘A bamboo of Master Xia equals ten gold ingots of Xiliang’.
As a leading figure of the realistic school of bamboo painting of the Ming dynasty, he emphasized the environment, often arranging bamboos in natural settings. He was very expressive in painting the natural gestures of bamboo swaying in wind and rain.
