Sun Wei (ca. 9th-10th century), a late Tang dynasty painter, was a native of Kuaiji (nowadays Shaoxing, Zhejiang province). He sought refuge in Shu at the end of the Tang dynasty and settled in Chengdu. Skilled in painting figures, ghosts and gods, waterfall, pine and stone, ink bamboo, eagle and dogs, he was particularly famous for painting water. According to research, this artwork, the surviving part of the painting Zhu Lin Qi Xian Tu (Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove), depicts four of the seven sages, namely Shan Tao, Wang Rong, Liu Ling, and Ruan Ji. Emperor Huizong of the Song dynasty inscribed Sun Wei Gao Yi Tu (Recluses by Sun Wei) on the painting.
