Li Di, a native of Heyang (nowadays Meng county, Henan province), was a painter serving in the Imperial Art Academy. Skilled in painting flowers and birds, he was also able to paint small-size landscapes. The bird in this painting is depicted with great details, and the bamboos are rendered by filling colours in contours, exuding an archaic and pure atmosphere. The inscription reads "painted by Li Di in the ding-wei year (1187) of the Chunxi era". The seal is blurred, possibly reading "Li Di". This painting is the earliest one among Li Di's paintings that are inscribed with a date.
