Description

Ren Renfa (1254-1327), also known by his zi (designated name) Ziming and hao (literary name) Yueshan, was a native of Qinglong town in Huating county (in present-day Qingpu, Shanghai). He directed critical water conservancy projects including regulating the Wusong River and renovating the Tonghui Canal. The archaeological site of the Yuan dynasty sluice gate in Zhidanyuan in Shanghai (now the Shanghai Yuan-dynasty Sluice Site Museum) was part of his legacy. He retired to his residence along the Qinglong River in Qingpu, where the Ren family cemetery was found. Ren excelled in painting horses, birds, and flowers. This work demonstrates meticulous outlines and luminous coloring, continuing the refined tradition of Song imperial bird-and-flower painting.
