Wang Yuan, also known by his zi (designated name) Ruoshui and his hao (literary name) Danxuan, was native to Hangzhou, Zhejiang province. He learned landscape painting from Guo Xi and flower-and-bird painting from Huang Quan. Done in the fourth year (1344) of the Zhizheng era, this painting depicts the birds gathering in summer. The birds are rendered by a realistic approach with precise details. The rock and plants are depicted and coloured with varied ink tones and brushstrokes. This painting is a representative work among those that pioneered the "ink flower-and-bird paintings" in the Yuan dynasty.
