Dong Qichang (1555-1636), also known by his zi (designated name) Xuanzai and hao (literary names) Sibai and Xiangguang, was native to Huating (nowadays Songjiang district, Shanghai). He obtained the degree of jinshi after passing the imperial examination in the 17th year (1589) of the Wanli reign. He later got promoted to the Minister of Rites. Dong was skilled in landscape painting. This painting is accomplished with dense brushstrokes and layers of ink to achieve an elegant style. The artist painted this painting at the age of 50 in the 32nd year (1604) of the Wanli reign.
