Hua Yan (1682-1756), also known by his zi (designated name) Qiuyue and his hao (literary name) Xinluo Shanren, was a native of Shanghang, Fujian province. He lived in Hangzhou and Yangzhou in his later years and was adept in painting figures, landscapes, flowers, birds, plants and insects. Out of his skills of sketches, the birds in his paintings always look lively.
