Dong Qichang (1555-1636), a calligraphy master native of Huating (known as Songjiang now in Shanghai), is also known by his zi (designated name) Xuanzai and hao (literary name) Xiangguang Jushi. He obtained the degree of jinshi after passing palace exam session of imperial examination in the seventeenth year (1589) of the Wanli reign. He later got promoted to the Minister of Rites in the Nanjing court. Dong was titled Wenmin posthumously. This work was created in the thirty-seventh year (1609) of Wanli reign, when the artist was fifty-five years old.
