Xu Guangqi (1562-1633), also known by his zi (designated name) Zixian and his hao (literary name) Xuanhu, was native to Shanghai. A renowned scholar in the late Ming dynasty, he was once appointed as the Minister of Rites and the Great Scholar of Wenyuan Ge (the palace library). Xujiahui, literary meaning "confluence of the Xu family", was named after him. Farming in the North (Bei Geng Lu) was his essays on agriculture. He wrote this manuscript when he was farming in Tianjin. There are ten pages remaining today. These two pages compare the features of Anhui ink and Song jiang ink, which reflects the communication of ink making between these two places.
