Wang Jian (1598-1677), also known by his zi (designated name) Xuanzhao (later Yuanzhao) and hao (literary names) Xiangbi and Ranxiang Anzhu, was a native of Taicang, Jiangsu. He was the great-grandson of Wang Shizhen, who served as the Minister of Justice in Nanjing during the Ming dynasty. He received instructions from Dong Qichang on painting landscapes. Wang Jian and Wang Shimin are among the "Four Wangs", who are known for their synthesis of ancient models through meticulous imitation. Wang Shimin once commissioned Chen Lian, a native of Huating (in present-day Shanghai), to create a smaller-size album that copies Wang's collection of Song and Yuan masterpieces. This album is Wang Jian's imitation based on Chen Lian's album, painted while Wang was in Jiading (in present-day Shanghai).
