Lu Yanzhang (1566-1631), also known by his zi (designated name) Boda, was a native of Huating (in present-day Qingpu, Shanghai). He was the vice secretary of the Ministry of Justice in Nanjing, the son of Minister of the Ministry of Rites Lu Shusheng, and the son-in-law of Mo Ruzhong. In the fifth year (1577) of the Wanli reign, Lu Shusheng asked Dong Qichang to be his son Lu Yanzhang's teacher. Dong Qichang also took Lu Shusheng as his teacher and started learning painting. In the 17th year (1589) of the Wanli reign, Dong Qichang and Lu Yanzhang both became jinshi (a successful candidate of imperial examination). Lu Yansheng was good at writing poems and essays, skilled in calligraphy. This work was accomplished with exquisite and smooth brushworks. Lu Yanzhang wrote about the springtime voyage in March and missing his friend.
