Description

Ye Shifang was a painter active during the Wanli reign (1573-1620). Lu Shusheng (1509-1605), also known by his zi (designated name) Yuji and his hao (literary name) Pingquan, was native to Huating (in present-day Qingpu, Shanghai). He rose to the Minister of Rites and obtained the honorary posthumous name "Wending". This scroll depicting Lu Shusheng and the monk Beichan was painted in the 26th year (1598) of the Wanli reign. Lu Shusheng was highly esteemed and influential for his moral character and devoted much of his life to studying Buddhism. This work bears inscriptions by Lu himself, as well as by his Songjiang friends Dong Qichang, Chen Jiru, Sun Kehong, and Lu Yingyang, offering a glimpse into the literary and artistic networks of Songjiang during that period.
