Description

Sun Kehong (1533-1611), also known by his zi (designated name) Yunzhi and hao (literary name) Xueju, was a native of Huating (in present-day Songjiang, Shanghai). As the son of the Minister of Rites Sun Cheng'en, Sun Kehong started his official career due to the emperor's special appointment that was a reward to his father. Sun Kehong later rose to Prefect of Hanyang. He was dismissed from his official post for the accusation that he was involved in a case related to Xu Jie, the former head of the Grand Secretariat. After Sun Kehong ended his official career and returned home, he constructed gardens, collected antiquities, and devoted himself to reading and painting. Yunlin Shipu (Stone Catalog of Cloudy Forest) was a Southern Song dynasty book on scholar's rocks by Du Wan, but the painting diverges significantly from Du's text. Instead, it depicts miniature rocks and yanshan stones that bring the charm of the nature to the domestic space.
