Wang Hui (1632-1717), also known by his zi Shigu (designated name) and hao (literary name) Gengyan Sanren, was a native of Changshu, Jiangsu and a leading figure among the "Four Wangs" of the early Qing dynasty. Cao Zhibai (1272-1355), also known by his zi (designated name) Zhensu and hao (literary name) Yunxi, was a native of Huating (present-day Qingpu, Shanghai). His landscape painting initially followed the "Li-Guo School" of the Northern Song dynasty; in his later years, through communication with artists such as Huang Gongwang, he started to integrate elements from Dong Yuan and Ju Ran's paintings. This work imitates the late style of Cao Zhibai, reflecting the enduring influence of Yuan-dynasty painters from the Shanghai region on later generations.
