Wu Changshuo (1844-1927), the representative figure of modern Shanghai's art world, was born Wu Junqing with zi (designated name) Changshuo and hao (literary name) Foulu, a native of Anji (in present-day Huzhou, Zhejiang province). In this portrait, he stands before a grove of tree in a long robe. His full cheeks radiate vitality. His image exudes scholarly grace. The landscape setting was added by Ni Tian (1855-1919) who was also known by his zi Mogeng, a master of the Shanghai School from Jiangdu (in present-day Yangzhou, Jiangsu province). Trained initially under Wang Su and later by Ren Yi, Ni excelled in figure, bird-and-flower, and landscape painting.
