Ren Yi (1840-1895), initially named Run with zi (designated name) Xiaolou, later changed his zi to Bonian. He was a native of Shanyin (nowadays Hangzhou, Zhejiang). He was skilled in painting figures, flowers, and birds and was one of the "Four Masters of the Shanghai School" as well as one of the "Four Rens of Shanghai". Hu Yuan (1823-1886), with zi (designated name) Gongshou, was from Huating (now Songjiang, Shanghai). He excelled in painting landscapes and flowers and was a pioneer of the Shanghai School. Gao Yongzhi (1850-1921), who served as the president of the "Yu Garden Painting and Calligraphy Society", commissioned this painting. In this work, Ren Yi painted the figures, while Hu Yuan completed the background scenery.
