Zhang Daqian (1899-1983), named Zhang Yuan, was widely known by his hao (literary name) Daqian. His studio was named Dafengtang (Hall of Wind), and he was native to Neijiang in Sichuan province. In Shanghai, he studied calligraphy and painting under the masters Zeng Xi and Li Ruiqing. After their passing, Zhang created portraits of both teachers to express his profound respect and remembrance. In these portraits, he used Western techniques with a realistic approach to depict their faces, while employing traditional Chinese line drawing to render their robes. He placed them amidst a landscape of streams and rocks, symbolizing their noble and virtuous character.
