Description

Xu Beihong (1895-1953), originally named Shoukang, was a native of Yixing, Jiangsu, and served as the president of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. Before studying in France, Xu studied under Kang Youwei in Shanghai. This portrait was commissioned by Kang, who asked Xu to create it based on a photograph of his third wife, He Zhanli, as an expression of his remembrance of her. Although an early work of Xu's, it already showcases his distinctive integration of Chinese and Western artistic techniques.
