Immortals in baimiao Style, handscroll

Artist: Anonymous

Date: Yuan dynasty (AD 1271–1368)

Material: Ink on silk

Description

This painting applies the technique of baimiao (plain drawing) to produce nine groups of immortal figures. The fifth group comprises three elders in loose robes and a youth in grass and leaf garment with a handscroll. An adorable tiger is curling behind the youth's legs. Preceding the painting appear the seal script characters Gathering of Immortals by Wu Jun of Qing dynasty. Towards the end of the scroll are inscriptions by two viewers of the Ming and Qing dynasties, comparing the brushwork to Ma Hezhi's 'orchid-leaf outlining' during the Southern Song dynasty. Yuan dynasty witnessed a decline in figure painting, and this is an example of Daoist and Buddhist figure art of the time.
