Shen Zhou (1427-1509), also known by his zi (designated name) Qinan and his hao (literary names) Shitian and Baishiweng, was native to Changzhou (nowadays Suzhou, Jiangsu province). Not interested in the career as an official, Shen made a living through writing, painting, and calligraphy. He learned landscape painting from the "Four Masters of the Yuan", as well as from Dong Yuan and Ju Ran. He later formed his own style. This painting is an imitation of a work by Dai Jin, a master of the Zhe School. It was painted in the 16th year (1480) of the Chenghua reign when Shen Zhou was 54.
