Description

This zun (wine vessel) is shaped like a lying hare, which looks ahead with legs underneath its body and lays its ears along the back. The body is hollow for storing liquid. Each side is decorated with motifs based on whirls, eyes and thunder.

Zun in the form of a hare is a rare type in the bronze wares. In the tombs of Marquis Xian and Marquis Mu of Jin state, several sacrificial hare-shaped zuns with different sizes and designs were found among burial objects, a real marvel of craftsmanship. Plant residues were found in this type of vessel, showing that the zun was probably used for wine making or consuming.
