Description

The Sogdian Whirl and Leap dances stand out as the most iconic among the vibrant Hu dances. Originated in Sogdia, both were introduced into China during the Northern dynasties and thrived in Sui and Tang era. The Whirl, known for its wind-like spins, originated in Kangguo (Samarkand), and was performed by both genders. The Leap from Shiguo (Tashkent), featuring dynamic leaps and stomps, was typically performed by men. Ceramics from this era preserve a wealth of vivid depictions of these dancers and musicians.
