Description

The armillary sphere depicted on this dish is a Portuguese royal emblem, used by Manuel I (reigned 1495-1521) and his son João III (reigned 1521-1557). The captain of Malacca ordered porcelain for João III, and this dish may be related to his or a later order, making it one of the earliest made-to-order porcelain for the European. The lettering on the armillary sphere is incorrect, which may be why the object did not meet the commissioner's expectations. This misrepresentation serves as excellent historical material for the early exchange between China and the West.
