Wu Wei (1459-1508), also known by his zi (designated name) Shiying and his hao (literary name) Xiaoxian, was native to Jiangxia (nowadays Wuchang, Hubei province). Wu Wei was appointed an official in the imperial court, serving as a painter. Adept in landscape and figure paintings, Wu Wei was the founder of the Jiangxia School, a branch of Zhe School. This painting is based on a story about the Yuan dynasty poet Yang Weizhen that involves the making of an iron flute. The artist painted this painting at the age of 26 years old in the 20th year (1484) of the Chenghua reign.
