Zhao Zuo (ca.1550 - ca.1637), also known by his zi (designated name) Wendu, was native to Huating (nowadays Songjiang district, Shanghai). Adept in painting landscape, he was a student of Song Xu. Zhao founded the Susong School. This painting depicts the flowing water among the mountains, with a person playing qin (zither) under the pine tree. The brushstrokes are gentle and rich. This scroll was painted in the 39^th year (1611) of the Wanli reign. The artist's inscription wrote that this painting imitates the painting Mountain and Flowing Spring by the Yuan dynasty scholar Zhao Mengfu.
