Zhao Zuo (ca.1550 - ca.1637), also known by his zi (designated name) Wendu, was native to Huating (nowadays Songjiang district, Shanghai). Adept in painting landscape, he was a student of Song Xu. Zhao founded the Susong School. This painting depicts the flowing water among the mountains, with a person playing qin (zither) under the pine tree. The brushstrokes are gentle and rich. This scroll was painted in the 39th year (1611) of the Wanli reign. The artist's inscription wrote that this painting imitates the painting Mountain and Flowing Spring by the Yuan dynasty scholar Zhao Mengfu.
