Description

Kuncan (1612-1673), original family name Liu, is also known by his monk name Shixi and hao (literary names) Baitu and Candaozhe. A native of Wuling (present-day Changde, Hunan province), Kuncan lived in Nanjing in his later years. Adept in landscape painting, he and Shitao were known as the "Two Shi". This painting depicts the landscape with unconstrained, strong, and sparse brushstrokes that show an archaic taste. This scroll was painted in the fifth year (1666) of the Kangxi reign when the artist was 55.
