Description

Luo Pin (1733-1799) is also known by his zi (designated names) Dunfu and Liangfeng and his hao (literary names) Huazhi Siseng and Jinniu Shanren. A native of She county in Anhui province, he lived in Yangzhou. As a student of Jin Nong, he was especially skilled in painting ink plum blossom. He was also adept in painting figure and miscellaneous themes other than major disciplines in Chinese painting. He was one of the "Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou". In this painting, Zhong Kui, already drunk, is leaning on a pine tree. The facial features are painted in a rustic and archaic method. The painter used calligraphic brushstrokes in painting the clothes. The tree and rocks are depicted in a xieyi (freehand) manner. The painting bears the artist's colophon and signature.
