Description

Ni Zan (1306-1374) is also known by his zi (designated name) Yuanzhen and hao (literary name) Yunlin, native to Wuxi in Jiangsu province. He led a reclusive life near Lake Tai, fleeing from wars at the end of the Yuan dynasty. Adept in regular and running scripts, Ni Zan was one of the "Four Masters of Yuan". Written in his middle years, this scroll is Ni Zan's letter to Shen You who styled himself Mo'an. The work is accomplished with wet ink and elegant brushstrokes, showcasing a rustic and calming style.
