Wang Chong (1494-1533), a native of Suzhou in Jiangsu, is also known by his zi (designated name) Lüji and hao (literary name) Yayi Shanren. He was adept in running and cursive script, especially skilled in small regular script. In this scroll, the calligrapher wrote 19 Han dynasty yuefu poems (lyrics of folk songs) with firm and brisk brushstrokes in an effortlessly elegant manner. This work was written in the sixth year (1527) of the Jiajing reign when the artist was 34.
