Du Qiong (1396-1474), also known by his zi (designated name) Yongjia and his hao (literary name) Dongyuan, was native to Wu County (nowadays Suzhou, Jiangsu province). At the end of the Yuan dynasty, the renowned scholar Tao Zongyi taught in Sijing in Songjiang and lived in a humble cottage in the South Village. Several years after Tao's death, Du Qiong painted this painting in memory of his teacher Tao Zongyi. In the inscription by Dong Qichang on this painting, he coined the term "Wu School Painting" for the first time, contextualize his painting in the art history, and pointed out that Tao was the "origin".
