Zhang Qi, also known by his zi (designated name) Yuqi, was native to Jiaxing. Adept in portrait painting, Zhang was Zeng Jing's student. Xiang Shengmo (1597-1658), also known by his zi Kongzhang and hao (literary name) Yi'an, was native to Jiaxing and a grandson of Xiang Yuanbian. For this painting, Zhang Qi painted the figures, while Xiang Shengmo added the background and inscription. It portrays the late Ming leading painter Dong Qichang, along with his artist friends Chen Jiru, Li Rihua, Lu Dezhi, Monk Shi Zhixian, and Xiang Shengmo himself. Painted in 1652, Xiang Shengmo created this piece as a recollection of a past gathering with these five artists, reflecting the artistic and cultural exchanges between the regions of Songjiang and Jiaxing.
