Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867) was a French Neoclassical painter. This artwork was authenticated as an original by Xu Beihong and others. The writing on the front, "à Rome", is likely added by a 19th-century French painter influenced by Ingres. The writing on the back, "Ingres à Rome", was probably added by an art dealer. This piece serves as early evidence to modern Chinese collecters' attempts to collect original works by European masters.
