On learning Chairman Mao Zedong's passing on September 9, 1976, Zhao Puchu had an overwhelming grief and wrote two elegies to commemorate Mao's great achievements and their friendship. This work, written with wet brushstrokes in thick ink, demonstrated Zhao's emotion to the great man. Zhao completed the work at the age of seventy.
