Jin Xuan (1361-1436), also known by his zi (designated name) Wending and hao (literary name) Shangsu, was a native of Qibao town in Huating county (in present-day Minhang, Shanghai). During the Yongle reign, he gained nationwide fame for his painting. Yang Shiqi wrote the epitaph for him. A landscape painter who studied Wu Zhen's style, Jin embodied archaic vigor that followed Yuan dynasty aesthetics in his brushwork. His surviving works are exceptionally rare. Jin profoundly influenced Shen Zhou and his mentors. Thus, he was a key precursor to the Wu School. Mo Shilong of Songjiang later hailed him as "the ancestral master of Songjiang".
