Description

Li Liufang (1575-1629), also known by his zi (designated names) Maozai and Changheng and hao (literary names) Tanyuan and Shenyu Jushi, was a native of Nanxiang Town in Jiading county (in present-day Shanghai). Renowned for constructing the famed Tanyuan garden, he was one of the "Four Gentlemen of Jiading" and maintained close ties with Qian Qianyi. This painting was dedicated to "Third Brother Wuchi" that refers to the poet Yan Chi. Yan Chi and his two brothers were known as the "Three Yans of Yuhang". Li Liufang travelled between Suzhou and Hangzhou frequently, and drew this painting in a boat. This painting was accomplished with moist and expressive brushstrokes, portraying the historic site of this Jiangnan town along the water.
