Mo Shilong (1537-1587), also known by his zi (designated name) Yunqing and hao (literary name) Qiushui, was a native of Huating (in present-day Songjiang, Shanghai) and a key calligrapher of the Songjiang School. This work exudes bold elegance with dynamic versatility. The fan was a farewell gift for Pan Yunduan (1526-1601) of Shanghai, who was departing to Sichuan for the position Administration Commissioner. Pan resigned two years later, retiring to his Yu Garden residence. Mo's daughter married Pan's son Pan Yunkui, and both Mo and Pan families held renowned art collections. For instance, the attributed Dong Yuan painting Residents on the Outskirts of Dragon Abode (now in Taipei Palace Museum) was passed from Mo Shilong to his son-in-law Pan Yunkui, the son of Pan Yunduan.
