Description

Hu Xigui (1839-1883) was also known by his zi (designated name) Sanqiao. Jin Lian (1841-1909) was also known by the zi Xinlan and hao Lengxiang. Ren Yu (1853-1901), also known by the zi Lifan, was one of the "Four Rens of Shanghai". These three artists collectively created this painting depicting Jin's Suzhou studio, the Lengxiang Studio. Initially a collaboration between Hu and Ren, the work was completed over two decades later (1908) when Jin added final touches and invited Wu Changshuo to inscribe it. The four artists often exchanged painting techniques in the Wu region and participated in the Yiyuan Garden literati gatherings hosted by the Gu Wenbin family.
