Lin Fengmian (1900-1991), a native of Mei county in Guangdong, served as the founding president of China National Art Academy (precursor to today's China Academy of Art). He stayed on Nanchang Road in Shanghai from 1951 to 1977 and worked at the Shanghai Chinese Painting Institute. He dedicated his life to combining Eastern and Western aesthetics. His innovatively incorporated gouache and watercolor into ink painting. During his stay in Shanghai, he frequently painted Jiangnan landscapes that express the essence of traditional Chinese landscape painting through colors and the representation of light. This painting exemplifies this style.
