Sun Xueni (1889-1965), alternatively named Hong, was also known by his zi (designated name) Cuizhang and his hao (literary name) Zhenliu. He was a native of Songjiang (now part of Shanghai). Xueni was a painter, art expert, and publisher who held positions such as painter at the Shanghai Chinese Painting Academy and council member of the Shanghai Artists Association. The artwork was created in 1958 during a visit to Dianshan Lake with Zhu Fukan, depicting the fishermen collecting iron to support steel production, which reflects the spirit of the new era.
