Description

Zhao Puchu gave the 10th Panchen his unqualified support for Tibetan Buddhism and helped establish a healthy Buddhist order. He opposed ethnic separatism provoked by external interference, stood up for the One-China policy, and promoted ethnic unity. Zhao Puchu and the 10th Panchen Lama enjoyed a deep karma, and to the Lama Zhao was both like a friend and mentor. On January 8, 1988, the Panchen Lama visited Zhao Puchu only to find him taking a noon nap. As he had a busy schedule, the Panchen wrote a note: 'Pulao (a revered name for Zhao Puchu), I came to see you but didn't want to disturb your sound sleep.' This note indicates that the Panchen Lama venerated and cared about Zhao very much, a senior thirty years older than himself. When the 10th Panchen attained nirvana in 1989, Zhao Puchu strongly supported the 11th Panchen Lama who the central government of China recognized by drawing a lot from a golden urn in following religious protocols and established practice. Zhao also warmly cared about the raising and educating of the 11th Panchen Lama.
