Ode to the 'Tianhua Rice Sprout' Tea, running script, handscroll

Artist: Zhao Puchu

Date: Modern

Material: Ink on paper

Description

In April 1986, production of a tea named 'Tianhua Rice Sprout' resumed in Taihu County, Anqing City — the hometown of Zhao Puchu — following the thousand-year heritage of 'Nanyang Rice Sprout', a tribute tea produced during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Resembling rice sprouts in shape, Tianhua tea leaves are prized for their green colour and lingering aftertaste. After tasting the tea, the 80-year-old gentleman composed this poem to express his love for his hometown: 'Don't say that I travelled around not missing home', and his preference for 'the refreshing aroma of our Tianhua tea'. In this work, a scholarly elegance is evident in the balanced arrangement of character structures.
