From 24 February to 8 March 1978, the First Session of the Fifth CPPCC National Committee convened in Beijing. During this time, Deng Xiaoping was elected Chair of the CPPCC National Committee, declaring that the Chinese nation had entered a new stage of development. His words were like a beacon of light, giving China hope as it proceeded through this era. Inspired by this historic moment, Zhao Puchu wrote these two poems. The poems express his ambition in the lines 'the old steed still strong-willed, despite my white hair' and 'quickly avail myself of the tailwind, to urge the horse on with a whip'. Although this work is a draft for a more formal version, it exhibits deft brushwork and a vigorous style.
