In 1977, Zhao Puchu inscribed a poem on Lai Shaoqi's painting, Luxuriant Pine Trees on Mount Huang. Looking at the grand panorama of pine trees in the scroll, he was suddenly filled with heroic fervour. In his poem, the zigzag pines resemble 'a troop of agile dragons', the willow 'falling and rising three times a day' symbolizes Deng Xiaoping's turbulent political career, and 'the dancing spring breeze represents the joy of billions of people'. Zhao Puchu lavishes praise on Deng Xiaoping, describing him as 'a pillar of the country and a talent hard to find' and noting that 'even in his old age, Deng sought not personal comfort but the nation's welfare'. Every word of this poem conveys the people's high hopes for the great man and their urgent need for him to resume his office, truly expressing the common wish at that time. At the age of 71, Zhao produced this calligraphic work in a meticulous and refined style, with dynamic and rhythmic brushwork.
