Liu Fei (1898-1983) was born in Liling, Hunan Province. He rose to prominence during the Northern Expedition. He then orchestrated defense strategies in the Battles of Shanghai and Tai'erzhuang to resist Japanese aggression. Following the establishment of the People's Republic of China, he successively served as Vice Chair of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Member of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress. Throughout his career, he remained dedicated to serving the nation and its people. In July 1986, the octogenarian Zhao Puchu wrote an inscription for the forthcoming book Biography of General Liu Fei. Bearing traces of revisions, this manuscript exhibits his sharp, hasty brushwork in a flowing, dynamic momentum. The work not only combines his true admiration for a departed friend with his superb calligraphic artistry, but also embodies the moral values and artistic passion of a senior scholar.
